How do I take a retest?

Eligibility for Retest

At Credentia, we ensure that you have fair opportunities to demonstrate your skills and knowledge if you do not pass the initial assessment and request a retake.

To check the number of allowed retest attempts and the elapsed time based on your state and eligibility route, refer to the respective state handbook on the credentia.com website or click here to learn more about Exam Attempts. To understand the different retest scenarios, please refer to the retest criteria below.

Eligibility for Retest

If you did not pass the exam, your eligibility to retake the exam and the number of allowed attempts can be found in your State Handbook.

Understanding and Preparing for your retest

  1. If you fail the Written (or Oral) Examination or the Skills Evaluation, your Score Report will provide you with information on how to re-take either or both parts.
  2. Score reports are provided online and can be printed or downloaded. If you have remaining attempts, you will be allowed to take the retest after the result.
  3. Please refer to the state handbook or click here to learn more about the exam attempts.
  4. The skills evaluation report will list the five skills you performed and indicate whether each skill was rated Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. Any skill rated Unsatisfactory is considered a failed skill.
  5. To pass the Skills Evaluation , you must receive a Satisfactory rating on all skills.
  6. On the Report, a failed skill will include the reason for the failure. It may be that the steps for the skill were performed incorrectly or a step, particularly a Critical Element Step, was missed or incorrect.
  7. The Failing Score Report will provide a numbered list of steps that were incorrect. For more information, refer to the list of skills steps in the candidate handbook for your specific state.

Submitting a Grievance

If you do not pass the Written or Skill Exams, you can submit a grievance if you feel the result is incorrect or unjust. When submitting the grievance:

  1. You must provide as much detail as possible in the grievance form.
  2. The grievance must be submitted within 30 days of the examination date.
  3. After receiving the grievance form, the grievance will be investigated.
  4. Once the investigation is complete, Credentia will send an email to your registered email address to inform you of the outcome.
  5. If the grievance is substantiated (or accepted), you will be allowed to retest at no additional cost.
  6. If the grievance is not substantiated (not approved), the score will remain as is, and you will have to pay the retest fees if any remaining attempts are left, based on the state eligibility criteria.
